LATEST NEWS - UNGASS 2008 REVIEW
Member states of the UN General Assembly have already committed to devote at least one full day of the annual session of the General Assembly to review and debate a report of the Secretary General on progress achieved in realizing the commitments set out in the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment.
As of today, we do not know when the AIDS Review will take place in the General Assembly (or if it will take place at all) and what form or shape it will take, as well as expected outcomes.
A group of civil society organisations have come together and drafted the below letter to Dr. Peter Piot, UNAIDS Executive Director, and to H.E. Dr. Srgjan Kerim, President of the United Nations General Assembly. The letter asks for their commitment and assurance that there will be minimum standards in organizing the AIDS Review meeting, particularly related to the need to have sufficient time to discuss in a substantive manner, meaningful involvement of civil society, and the need to have the AIDS Review separate from the MDG meeting.
Please sign on
your support (individual or institutional) to this letter to be send to Dr. Piot and to H.E. Dr. Srgjan Kerim next week. Please send your name, institutional affiliation and country to universalaccess2010@icaso.org BEFORE
Monday November 12, 2007. Time is of essence, as we do not know when the negotiations will start.
