VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) hosted a workshop for educational workers and peer volunteers on 21 November in Zhitikara, an industrial town in Kostani Oblast, Kazakhstan introducing them to interactive training methodologies in raising awareness of HIV and AIDS in preparation for World AIDS Day.

Educational workers from each school in the town and coordinators of the youth volunteer centre which runs a peer education program came together to participate in an interactive training workshop focusing on HIV awareness. Participants were introduced to new interactive training ideas which they can use to enhance to their current HIV awareness campaigns.
Participants were invited to work together and solve an HIV and AIDS quiz before taking part in interactive trainings relating to the modes of transmission of HIV and how HIV can spread through a community. With a specialist from Social Fund ‘Help’ based in Kostani present the participants were also able to ask questions, check their knowledge and listen to up to date information relating to HIV and AIDS in Kazakhstan.
This is the first workshop of its kind in Zhitikara.
“Most participants assumed their community, wrongly, was unaffected by HIV however with nine registered cases here there is even greater need to educate the town about how to avoid putting yourself at risk” commented Vladimir Bozhko, coordinator of Zhitikara Youth Centre which runs a peer education program within the town.
