Unions Target Japanese Embassies: “Keep G8 Promises for AIDS & Health”

The Global Unions will be carrying their campaign for a new G8 AIDS mechanism to Japanese embassies world-wide from April 28th, through to the Global AIDS Week of Action and onto the G8 summit. Encouraged by the progress made towards establishing a mechanism at the last G8 the Global Unions are appealing to the World AIDS Campaign constituencies and others in civil society to join the 2008 effort.

The Global Union AIDS Programme (GUAP) campaign will include the delivery of letters to all government delegations attending this years UN Commission on Sustainable Development (early May ), World Health Assembly (mid May), International Labour Conference (early June) and the UNGASS High-Level Review (June).

For the third year, labour’s 28 April “International Commemoration Day (ICD) for Dead and Injured Workers”, will feature AIDS as a prominent theme in its overall message which this year is “Good Occupational Health For All Workers”.

“Trade unions are proud of their strong partnership with the WAC. This year we are particularly hopeful that WAC constituents at country level will join our April 28th efforts and beyond to press for the G8 to honour its promise for Universal Access and creating a new G8 AIDS mechanism,” Alan Leather, GUAP Chair.
